The HCG diet is an effective yet controversial program for those who are looking to lose weight quickly and efficiently. It is especially helpful for those who have already tried a rigorous exercise and reduced calorie diet plan, but have reached a plateau in their weight loss. Some boast weight loss as extreme as forty pounds in just six weeks, and this is not uncommon, as the doctors who promote this diet expect their patients to lose about one to two pounds per day.

HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a natural hormone that is produced in a woman’s body during pregnancy. The reason the HCG diet is so powerful is because it tricks the body into thinking it is pregnant, therefore there is an increased metabolic rate that leads to better fat burning. This is because the body will now believe it needs to feed two, so when used in combination with a very low calorie diet the body is forced to use the stored nutrients, leading in turn to quicker fat burning and utilizing fat stores for energy.

Contrary to what many believe, the HCG diet is great for both men and women. Men will not suffer any adverse side effects such as increased breast size, and more often than not men will lose more weight than women. In addition, neither men nor women have to worry about having any symptoms of pregnancy while on this diet.

Another common misconception is that while on this diet, a dieter has no energy due to the consumption of only about five hundred calories per day. This is false as well, as those who have gone on this diet have reported no decrease in energy but have lost the weight they set out to lose. The diet also requires that the dieter take vitamin and mineral supplements, and after the first forty days when the excess weight is lost, the dieter returns to healthy eating along with healthy lifestyle changes. The HCG diet will also help develop a better way of living in the long term because it teaches those on it to be mindful of what they are consuming.
