How to Understand Your HCG Level?

HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin hormone is usually produced in the body of a pregnant woman. If a certain amount of HCG (over 5 mIU/ml), is found in her blood or urine, it indicates that she is pregnant. Within the first 8 – 11 weeks of pregnancy, the HCG level doubles in every 48 or 72 hours. Understanding the level of HCG during pregnancy is very important since it indicates if the pregnancy is progressing in a normal manner.

If you are wondering how to understand the HCG level, go through the following instructions:

  • HCG can be detected in the blood after approximately 11 days of conception. So one can go for a HCG blood test 3 days prior to your period date. Otherwise the result will be negative because you need to give some time for HCG to build up in your bloodstream.
  • A single HCG test may not be enough. The first test will only tell you whether you are pregnant. But it will not help you to understand how your pregnancy is proceeding. Once the first test is done, you should opt for a second test within 48 hours. If your pregnancy is proceeding normally, the HCG level will be doubled within 48 hours.
  • The level of HCG may vary from one woman to another. For example the HCG level of a woman may be 20 (in 4 weeks of progression). Another one may have a HCG level of 100. But if their HCG levels double within 72 hours, it means that both of the pregnancy is proceeding normally.

If someone’s HCG level is falling, it indicates that the pregnancy is failing. It happens only if there is any problem with pregnancy. So make sure to check your HCG level at regular intervals if you are pregnant because the levels indicate whether your pregnancy is healthy or not.
